Gislinge project update: The linen sail

31-01-2017
One of the key elements of the Gislinge Boat Project was the production of a linen sail for Gislinge III. Several of the Museum?s other vessels have sails of wool but this is the first time we have experimented with hand-woven linen sailcloth. Measuring 10m squared, the sail is made from five panels which were then sewn together. In this film, the Museum?s weaver, Anna Nørgaard, explains the processes involved in producing a sail using flax, from the initial harvesting and processing of the fibres to weaving and sewing the finished sailcloth.
